Creative ways to overcome body image issues

January 4, 2023

Creativity can be a helpful tool for anyone looking to overcome body issues.

With Christmas officially over and the ‘new year new me’ drive in full swing, it can feel difficult to love ourselves where we are now, particularly our bodies. We all know that gaining weight over Christmas is inevitable, it’s somehow harder to detach that from our self-worth particularly when it comes to looking in the mirror.

But why get creative? How will that help? Creative activities can be used as a form of self-expression and self-exploration, which can help us better understand and accept our bodies. Engaging in creative pursuits can also be a way to shift our focus away from negative thoughts and towards something positive and enjoyable. Additionally, creativity can be used as a way to challenge and change negative body image beliefs, and to develop a more positive and accepting relationship with our bodies.

So here are 5 creative things you can do this month to start to fall in love with your body:

Art therapy

Art therapy is a form of therapy that uses creative activities, such as drawing, painting, and sculpting, to help individuals explore and express their feelings, thoughts, and experiences. Engaging in art therapy can be a powerful way to connect with one's emotions and gain insight into one's body image beliefs and behaviours.

Journaling

Writing in a journal can be a helpful way to explore and process one's thoughts and feelings about one's body. It can also be a way to set goals and track progress in working towards a more positive body image.

Photography

Taking photos can be a way to celebrate and appreciate one's body, rather than focusing on its flaws. It can also be a way to document and reflect on one's journey towards body acceptance.

Cooking or baking

Preparing and creating meals or baked goods can be a way to nourish and care for one's body, rather than focusing on its appearance. It can also be a way to explore new flavours and ingredients, which can be a fun and rewarding creative activity.

Dance

Dancing can be a fun and enjoyable way to connect with one's body and to express oneself creatively. It can also be a way to build self-confidence and body positivity.
