MYO and Working With Us + Current open roles (scroll down)
A bit about us
M.Y.O is on a mission to spread the joy of creativity, connection and happiness to adults all over the world! We have a studio in London Bridge and currently run over 14 different creative workshops, where people learn arts and crafts and how to express their creative side, in a fun, positive and relaxing environment.
Over the last 7 years we’ve hosted 10,000s of adults in our studio, for public classes and events like creative team building, hen parties and birthdays, and off-site at festivals, company offices and brand activations. We’re virtual now too, of course! We also occasionally produce crafty how-to video content for world famous brands, have a range of creative kits and a podcast about bringing creativity to life and business. Lots more ideas in the pipeline too.
We’ve worked with Diageo to launch a new Irish whiskey, hosted teams from Google, LinkedIn, Warner Music, Monzo, Virgin, been at events like The Classic Boat Festival, Life Lessons at the Barbican and the Hackney Half, to working with organisations like Imperial College bringing science to life through creativity and have been featured in the Evening Standard, Time Out, Lonely Planet, Balance Magazine, Business Insider and lots more. 7 years in, still so many exciting opportunities to go after and it feels like we’re ready to take it to the next level!
We are a self-funded, independent business that likes to do things differently, and were co-founded by couple Diana Muendo and Samuel Lehane. We have a nimble and brilliant dynamic team, with a great mix of creative and corporate experience, along with the support of additional freelance creatives to host classes. What we are looking for:
- We’re looking for a creative, friendly, flexible and enthusiastic person to host workshops with us and help us spread creativity to the World! We’re especially interested in someone who may know hand-building pottery, but don’t worry if not, a genuine enthusiasm to learn is ok and we’ll provide thorough training on all the classes you are expected to teach.
- Perfect for creatives who want a flexible role, on the side of another job or career.
- The role will be freelance contracted, with ability and commitment to working on weekends essential. There will typically be 4-8 classes on Saturdays and Sundays a month you could do - you will be told at least 3 weeks in advance where possible.
- Training will commence in August.
- And remember, Christmas is going and the creative sessions around then are particularly festive and fun!
About your role
- Hours - Generally 10.30am - 6.45pm or 2pm - 9.45pm on a Saturday or Sunday (or both).
- Weekend classes generally run from 11:30am - 2pm, 3pm - 5:30pm or 6:30 - 9pm - with c30 - 45 minutes either side for clean up and tidy up.
- Frequency - likely 3 Saturdays per month from August - with Ad Hoc Sundays.
- We do off-site creative sessions across London too and host regular public classes, so there will be possibility of some mid week workshops, on an adhoc basis.
- Pay - £15 - £20 per hour depending on the group size hosting - will be agreed in advance and total hours may vary month on month.
Responsibilities
- Setting up the class with the appropriate materials and equipment - checklists are provided.
- Welcoming guests and introducing them to M.Y.O, our classes and our mission.
- Delivering engaging workshops that are structured, beginner friendly and relaxing – with a “wow” output that guests can take home with them.
- This will initially be Ceramic Painting, Hand Built Pottery, Lino Printing, candle painting and T-shirt / Tote Bag design using hand cut vinyl, along with more festive classes over the Christmas period - training will be provided for all these.
- Managing the ambience during the workshop (calm music, energy levels) and cleaning up after the class - dishes, equipment and studio and putting everything away.
- Collecting feedback and necessary follow up details from guests.
- Taking some engaging and colourful social media content during the class – photos and videos - on your phone
- Keeping the studio clean and tidy.
- Letting our General Manager know about any restocking that may be required.
About you - must have
- Enjoys being creative, e.g. you may know how to sew, draw or like to learn to make new things or have a genuine desire to learn more crafts.
- Willing to commit to the role from August to the end of the year at least.
- Love people. Speaking to them, understanding their needs, figuring out how to serve them best and, ultimately, really helping them get creative - so empathy is key.
- Resourceful, well organized and calm under pressure - can think on your feet.
- Communicative, dependable and reliable - you always do what you say you will and show up or communicate effectively if for whatever unforeseen reason you can’t.
- High energy, self-motivated and have a can-do attitude - a classic, but hugely important, you’ll have lots of independence to make good things happen during your workshops, knowing the team is there to support you.
- Loves sharing ideas and always open to feedback - giving and receiving.
- Has the best interests of what we are trying to do at heart - help more people and companies get creative, as it’s a fun thing which everyone can do, has real mindfulness benefits and is a brilliant way to connect with others.
To date, this role has suited freelance creatives who have another creative career as their main focus and have flexibility with their schedule. We have had emerging musicians, comedians, printmakers, potters, theatre directors and writers in the past. It could also suit someone with a stable part-time corporate job that wants to scratch a creative itch on weekends.
